Reflectional Symmetry Demonstration

2013-08-16 22:09
This GeoGebra applet visually demonstrates reflectional (line) symmetry of planar figures. Using the Mirror command and interactive buttons, users can observe the reflection of various image objects across a specific axis of symmetry. The construction incorporates points, segments, lines, and angles to help learners deeply understand the geometric properties of reflection, the determination of the axis of symmetry, and the geometric relationships between corresponding points. This makes it an excellent interactive teaching tool for exploring geometric transformations and symmetry. Users can manipulate the figures in real time, enabling them to discover that corresponding points are equidistant from the axis of symmetry and that the segment connecting any pair of corresponding points is perpendicular to the axis of symmetry. The applet supports hands-on exploration, allowing students to drag vertices, adjust the position of the axis of symmetry, and immediately see how the reflected image responds. It is particularly suitable for middle school and high school geometry courses, supporting both classroom demonstration and independent student inquiry.
