Area of Rectangles and Squares
This GeoGebra applet demonstrates the concept of area by tiling rectangles and squares of various sizes with 1 cm² unit squares. Students can visually explore the relationship between the area and side lengths of rectangles and squares, gaining an intuitive understanding of the area formulas (length × width and side × side). Constructed using Polygon and Segment commands, the applet features multiple rectangles and squares of different dimensions that students can interact with. By observing how unit squares fill each shape, learners discover that the total number of unit squares corresponds directly to the product of the shape's side lengths. This hands-on, interactive approach helps students connect the abstract formula for area to its concrete geometric meaning, reinforcing that area measures the amount of two-dimensional space enclosed within a figure. The applet is designed for elementary-level mathematics instruction and supports inquiry-based learning, allowing students to manipulate or observe different configurations and draw conclusions about how changing side lengths affects the resulting area.
