Matrix Representation of General Linear Transformations
This GeoGebra example demonstrates general linear transformations and their matrix representations in the two-dimensional plane. Through an interactive matrix M and its inverse invM, the applet shows how the standard basis vectors i and j, along with arbitrary vectors u and v, change under transformation. Users can modify the entries of matrix M using sliders or direct input, and the applet instantly updates all transformed objects to reflect the new linear map.
Using polygon vertices, specifically squares and parallelograms, the demonstration visually illustrates the effects of linear transformations on 2D shapes, including rotation, scaling, and shearing. Learners can observe how a unit square is mapped into a parallelogram whose sides are determined by the images of the basis vectors, reinforcing the fundamental principle that a linear transformation is completely determined by where it sends the basis vectors.
The applet also transforms the coordinate grid lines, allowing students to see how the entire plane is warped under the action of the matrix. This grid visualization provides a powerful geometric intuition for understanding concepts such as invertibility, determinant as area scaling factor, and eigenvalues. When the determinant of M is zero, the transformation collapses the plane onto a line or point, and the inverse matrix invM becomes undefined, offering a clear visual connection between algebraic properties and geometric behavior.
By linking algebraic computation with geometric interpretation, this tool helps students bridge the gap between abstract matrix operations and their concrete spatial consequences. It is particularly useful for courses in linear algebra, where visualizing how matrices act on vectors and shapes deepens conceptual understanding and supports problem-solving skills. Students benefit from immediate visual feedback as they adjust matrix entries, enabling experimentation and discovery-based learning in a dynamic and engaging environment.
